Three amigos - Bayard, Pete, Kirk The grand finale of our Panama adventure was a trek into the eastern Darien province, which is filled with rainforests and borders Columbia.  We were obstensibly there to help Kirk's friend Mike catch butterflies for his bizarre experiments.

"Crazy Gringos!"

Geckos were everywhere! These guys were smart, and knew if they stayed by the lights, they could gorge on all the bugs they could handle.
Especially in the rainy season, the muddy Darien roads redefined the term "Hard drive".Hey - is that a helicopter in the road ahead?... yep. It passed about 25 feet over us, the rotors trimmed the trees!
When you live on a 300-mile-long road and don't have a car, you do a lot of hitchhiking. Here Mike and Kirk ride in back with a guy who asked for a ride.October 1 is independence day in Panama. Here we see a local parade. Not sure what happened here - either pete just ate or drank something nasty, or Kirk made a really tasteless joke.
A river we crossed on the way back from the Darien. (see detail at right)Kuna indians don't just live in the San Blas - they also live along rivers in the Darien.
Ah, the elusive bush-pig. Why did I take a picture of this when I could have spent my last picture on the troop of Howler monkeys we saw? Don't ask - I don't know either!
